BYD Localization Lost After an OTA Update — How to Restore It

We get how alarming this is: you get in, the screen is all in Chinese again, your familiar apps are gone, and the first thought is "something burned out." Take a breath — in the vast majority of cases this is a software issue you can recover from, not a hardware failure. The head unit is fine, the car is fine, and the language can almost always be restored.

First aid: try this right now

A few safe steps that won't break anything:

  • Force-restart the head unit. Hold the power/volume button for about 10–15 seconds until the screen goes dark and the system reboots. Some post-OTA glitches clear up right there.
  • Give the system time. If the multimedia is stuck at a percentage after the update, sometimes the firmware is still finishing in the background. Give it 15–20 minutes with the engine running before drawing conclusions.
  • Check the 12V battery. A voltage drop during OTA is a common reason an update installs badly. If the car sat unused for a while, top up the charge or start the engine.
  • Don't flash random firmware. Don't install "some apk from a forum" and don't re-run OTA blindly — that's the easiest way to turn a temporary problem into a harder one.

If the language didn't come back after a reboot, that's normal and expected. Let's get to the cause.

Why this happens

BYD's factory software is Chinese. Localization and the familiar services aren't in it to begin with — they're added separately, tailored to our region. When an OTA "lands," the update overwrites the system with the factory version, and everything that was configured on top of it disappears with it.

Hence the typical symptoms: localization lost after an update, the interface back in Chinese, no internet (a frequent pain on the Song Plus), DiLink crashing, GoogleMarket launching and crashing, and with no internet, maps, music and the browser won't open. Put simply: the Chinese factory version just doesn't include it, so it disappears on update.

The key thing to understand: this is not a mechanical failure. Nothing "burned out" — the system simply reverted to its factory Chinese state.

What NOT to do

  • Don't reflash blindly. A random "just to be sure" firmware is the fastest route to a black screen after a multimedia update.
  • Don't disconnect the battery terminals hoping to "reset everything." It doesn't affect an OTA problem, but it can add new ones.
  • Don't ship the car "back to China" or hunt for an official rollback — your language isn't in the factory update line anyway.
  • Don't keep holding the volume button on repeat. Yes, holding the volume button does reboot the tablet, but endless reboots won't fix the issue.

How we restore it

We work carefully and predictably:

  1. Symptom diagnosis. We look at what exactly dropped out: language only, or also the app connection, services and internet.
  2. Backup. Before any changes we capture the current state, so there's always a point to roll back to.
  3. Safe restore. We bring back the localization and the software adaptation for the Ukrainian region, and restore the head unit's connection to the app and the needed services.
  4. Critical modules untouched. We work only with the multimedia unit — no intervention in the modules responsible for driving and safety.

Time-wise this usually takes 1–2 hours in the workshop (Kyiv, 21 Prykoliina St.). The car stays with us for that time — you pick it up already in your language.

What it costs

Localization / post-OTA restore starts from $300. We quote the exact price after diagnosing the symptom: restoring language only is one thing; internet and services going down together is another. No hidden charges — we state the amount before work starts, and you decide.

FAQ

Can it be restored remotely?

No. To make a backup and a safe rollback, the car needs to be in the workshop — that way we don't put your system at risk.

Will the car's warranty stay intact?

We work only with the multimedia and don't touch critical modules, so the components that affect the factory warranty stay untouched.

Will the language drop out again after the next OTA?

It might — because every factory update brings the Chinese base back. That's why we reapply the localization free of charge within 6 months.

Describe the symptom — we'll assess it

Don't guess blindly. Message us on Telegram, WhatsApp or Viber, briefly describe what happened ("everything's in Chinese after OTA," "no internet," "DiLink keeps crashing"), and we'll give you a quick preliminary read. More detail on restoring language and services is on the BYD localization page.
