CarPlay or Android Auto Gone After an OTA Update on Zeekr or BYD: How to Get It Back
Stay calm: the car is fine, this is a software glitch
You get in, plug in your phone — and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto simply doesn't appear. The icon is gone from the menu, or the cable shows charging but the screen won't mirror. Most often this happens right after an OTA update on a Zeekr or BYD. First, some reassurance: in the vast majority of cases this is not a hardware failure and not a problem with your iPhone or Android. The head unit is alive, the battery and motor run normally — the update simply reset the localization settings, and the system needs to be carefully returned to working order.
This article is a step-by-step guide: what you can safely try right now, why it happens, and how we restore CarPlay without any risk to the car's electronics.
First aid: what to do right now
Before driving anywhere, try a few safe actions. They break nothing and often bring CarPlay back after a minor update hiccup.
- Restart the main screen. Press and hold the power button (or the steering-wheel button, depending on the model) for about 10–15 seconds, until the screen goes dark and the logo appears. This is a “soft” reboot of the head unit — it does not erase your data.
- Check the cable and port. Try another original cable and specifically the USB port marked for data transfer (not just charging). Cheap cables often stop passing data after an update.
- Make sure your phone allows the connection. On iPhone: Settings → General → CarPlay; on Android, check that Android Auto is enabled and that you confirm the on-screen prompt.
- Check the 12-volt system. If the car sat idle for a few days, a weak 12V auxiliary battery causes odd electronic glitches, including missing icons. Just let the car run or charge so the system stabilizes.
If the icon comes back — great, it was a temporary glitch. If not, read on, but don't experiment with firmware.
Why it happens after an OTA
In their factory (Chinese) build, Zeekr and BYD are configured for the domestic market. For CarPlay and Android Auto to work properly here, localization is added to the system — an adaptation of the software to our region and familiar services.
An OTA update lands “on top of” that adaptation. The manufacturer pushes a fresh firmware version and often reverts system settings to factory — that is, to the Chinese configuration where the usual CarPlay is simply missing from the menu or deactivated. Hence the effect: everything worked yesterday, and after the morning update the icon is gone or the phone won't connect. This is not your mistake and not a defect — it's just how cars built for another region behave when they update.
What you should not do
- Don't flash the car with “dumps” from chat groups. Random firmware from Telegram channels is the fastest way to brick the head unit and create warranty problems.
- Don't do a blind factory reset. On a localized car this can wipe the very thing that kept CarPlay working and make recovery longer.
- Don't re-run the OTA update “to fix it.” The next version can overwrite the settings the same way — the problem won't disappear, it will pile up.
- Don't panic over the 12V. No need to disconnect terminals or jump-start without reason — start with the simple steps above.
How we restore CarPlay
We work carefully and predictably. First, a backup of the system's current state. Then we safely restore the localization and correct settings so CarPlay and Android Auto appear in the menu again and connect reliably. Critical control units (ECUs) — motor, brakes, battery — we do not touch: we work only with the multimedia layer.
On timing: a short condition check takes about 15 minutes, and the work itself usually takes 1–2 hours at our workshop in Kyiv (21 Prykoliyna St., open 09:00–21:00). You pick the car up the same day with CarPlay working.
A word on owners' biggest fear — “what if another OTA wipes it again?” We have a guarantee for that: within 6 months we re-apply the localization free of charge if an update overwrites it.
How much it costs
We quote the exact price right after the VIN and inspection — no hidden fees, no “extras along the way.” Basic localization recovery (the LANG BASIC package) starts from $300. For Zeekr the work starts from $300, for BYD from $350. If you also need online services and full connectivity, the LANG+CONNECT package starts from $500. If it's easier not to drive over yourself, our auto-concierge from $100 will collect and return the car.
FAQ
Will I lose the car's warranty?
We don't interfere with critical ECUs and work only with multimedia and localization, taking a backup first. We deliberately rule out any risk to the factory systems.
CarPlay is gone but the screen itself works — is that definitely a repair?
Most often this is a software matter after an update, not a breakdown. That's why we start with the simple steps and only then move to localization.
And if an update resets everything again?
Within 6 months we re-apply the localization free of charge. After that — as needed, and always starting with an inspection.
