Locked EV Features on BYD and Zeekr: What You Can Legally Activate in Ukraine
You imported a Zeekr or BYD from China — and some of its capabilities feel like they are "behind glass". Smartphone climate control, the voice assistant, and certain online services work only inside China or require a subscription tied to a Chinese account. This is not a fault. It is software that was originally configured for the Chinese domestic market. What it is and why it matters
A modern EV is a Software-Defined Vehicle: the hardware is largely the same, but software controls access to features. The manufacturer splits capabilities by market. So a "Chinese" car in Kyiv may have fully working hardware, yet:
- menus and prompts appear in Chinese characters;
- some services (navigation, music, voice assistant) are built around Chinese clouds and accounts;
- certain comfort features and subscriptions are active only inside China.
It is important to separate two cases. First — when a feature is physically present in the car and "locked" only by language or regional settings. That is a localization and region-adaptation task, and it is solved legally. Second — when an option is a paid manufacturer subscription or bound to a Chinese account and cloud. We do not "hack" that or bypass payment: we tell you honestly when activation is impossible.
What is included and how we work
The logic is simple: diagnostics first, then an honest answer, and only then the work.
- Interface localization into Ukrainian, Russian or English — menus, prompts, the head-up display.
- Region adaptation of the software so the available services and navigation work correctly.
- A backup before we start and a safe rollback if anything goes wrong.
- We do not touch critical ECUs (battery, braking, safety management).
- Diagnostics take about 15 minutes; the work itself takes 1–2 hours in the workshop.
What we do not do: we do not hack manufacturer subscriptions, do not bypass paid options, and do not interfere with safety systems. If a feature can only be enabled illegally or is technically impossible without a Chinese account, you will hear about it right away — not after paying.
