GB/T Ports on Chinese EVs: Why GB/T→CCS2 Adapters Melt and Which Adapter Is Safe

A Chinese-domestic-market EV (Zeekr, BYD and others) almost always ships with a GB/T charging port. In Ukraine, public stations are Type 2 (AC) and CCS2 (DC). To charge, owners reach for a GB/T→Type2 or GB/T→CCS2 adapter — and that's where the trouble starts: cheap adapters overheat, melt and, in the worst case, damage the car's port or the station. Let's break down why this happens, how to choose a safe adapter, and where current — 32A vs 60A — comes in.

What it is and why it matters

GB/T is the Chinese charging-connector standard; Type2/CCS2 is the European one. An adapter physically bridges the two, but its real job is carrying the working current without overheating. Contact heat = I²·R: the worse the contact (thin, oxidized, loose) and the higher the current, the more heat. A cheap adapter with poor contact groups can't shed heat over a long session — the plastic melts and the contact "welds" itself to the port.

The role of current. AC charging (Type2) is usually up to 32A per phase (~7 kW): the adapter is simpler here, and the key is that it's rated for your onboard charger's current with margin. DC charging (CCS2) means tens to hundreds of amps (a nominal 60A and up per line) plus a different communication protocol between car and station. A passive $30 DC adapter not only fails to hold the current — it can misreport signals, which is a risk for both the car and the station.

FAQ

Which adapter is safe? One rated for your car's working current with margin, with quality contacts and (for DC) correct protocol handshaking. For AC, a certified 32A GB/T→Type2 is usually enough.

Why did my adapter get hot? Most often an undersized current rating, or worn/dirty contacts on a long session.

32A or 60A? 32A is the typical ceiling for home AC charging. 60A and above means DC, where contacts and protocol matter more than just "thicker wire."

Can I damage the station? A wrong DC adapter can trigger a handshake error or overheating on the station side — that's why we match the DC solution individually.
