First aid: try this right now

These steps are safe and won't "break" anything:

1. Force a media restart. Press and hold the power/volume button on the screen for ~10–15 seconds until the system reboots. Sometimes it takes 2–3 tries — that's normal.
2. Let the car "sleep." Lock it, take the key away for 10–15 minutes, don't open it. Some modules go to sleep and then start up correctly again.
3. Check the 12V battery. A weak or drained auxiliary battery often produces exactly this black screen — for example, after a voltage drop in the cold. A recharge or replacement frequently brings the system back to life.
4. Don't install random firmware or OTA updates. If the system offers yet another update "to fix it" — don't rush. Often that is what deepens the problem.

A common forum tip — "turn the windshield defrost to max so the screens start" — sometimes helps, but it's not a cure, just a load on the electrical system. If holding the button and these steps change nothing, stop experimenting and move on to the sections below.

Why this happens

Most often the root cause is not mechanics but software localization. Many VW ID.4 and ID.6 cars are imported from China or the US. There the factory software has neither the Ukrainian interface language nor the services and maps we're used to.

When such a car receives an OTA update, it overwrites the regional settings and localization back to the factory region. Hence the familiar symptoms:

• "After the update new languages appeared, but Android Auto and navigation don't work."
• "Imported from the US or China — the radio gets no stations, navigation shows the US."
• "The dot on the map stays in one place" — because the map module is set for a different region.

• Don't reflash blindly. A random software version "from the internet" can turn a black screen into a full brick.
• Don't disconnect the battery terminals "to reboot." On modern VWs this is not a safe reset: you can trigger errors in other modules.
• Don't ship the car back to China or the US. The problem is solved locally, in Kyiv.
• Don't hit the button 20 times or run OTA updates in circles. That doesn't restore the localization, it only confuses the system further.
