Zeekr Won't Turn On or Black Screen After OTA Update: What to Do
Your Zeekr screen has gone dark, the car just sits there, nothing responds to touch — and the first feeling is panic. Take a breath. In the vast majority of cases, a "black screen after an update" is a recoverable software issue, not a hardware failure. Below we calmly walk through what you can safely do right now, why this happens at all, and how we bring the car back to normal.
First aid: try this right now
These are well-known, safe steps that won't harm the car. If nothing changes after them, don't keep torturing the vehicle — move on to the recovery section.
- Force-restart the media system. On most Zeekr models, a long press of the power or volume button on the central screen (roughly 10–15 seconds) reboots the main unit. Often the black screen comes back to life afterwards.
- Let the car "settle". Lock it, take the key and phone away, wait 10–15 minutes and open it again. Sometimes the system is finishing an update in the background and recovers on its own.
- Check the 12-volt battery. A 12V voltage drop during an OTA is a common cause of freezes. If the car is laggy, the screen flickers or doesn't respond at all, the culprit may be a weak 12V battery rather than the firmware. Charging it or checking the terminals often fixes everything.
- Do not tap random updates. If the system offers to "retry the update" or you see unfamiliar options in Chinese, don't press at random. Every failed attempt makes recovery harder.
If the screen turns on but everything is in Chinese again, your language is gone, CarPlay doesn't work, or the app "can't see the car" — the vehicle is fine; the update simply wiped the localization. That's exactly what gets restored.
Why this happens
Zeekr (the 001 and other models) ships from the factory with a Chinese software version. When a car is prepared for use in Ukraine, your language, familiar services and the connection to the mobile app are added and adapted to our region.
An OTA update arrives from the factory servers and overwrites the system with the factory Chinese build. That build simply doesn't contain your language or the adapted services, so after the update:
- the interface reverts to Chinese;
- the server connection drops and the app stops seeing the car;
- the internet may disappear if the regional connectivity settings were reset;
- CarPlay stops working, and sometimes the 360 cameras drop out;
- in worse cases, a blue or black screen with Chinese characters after a failed update.
The key point: this is not a mechanical failure. The hardware is intact. It's the software and regional settings that were reset — and they can be brought back.
What not to do
- Don't reflash at random. Firmware and keys downloaded "from Telegram" or "off a forum" are the fastest way to turn a recoverable situation into a complicated one.
- Don't disconnect the battery terminals "to reboot". On modern cars, cutting power abruptly during a half-finished update can leave the system in a limbo state.
- Don't hunt for a full factory reset. A factory reset restores the very Chinese build that caused the problem.
- Don't run another OTA "to fix it". Re-updating on top of a failure usually only deepens the problem.
How we recover it
We work carefully and predictably:
- Symptom assessment. We check what exactly failed — language, app connection, CarPlay, cameras, or whether the system boots at all.
- Backup of the current state. Before changing anything, we record what's there so we always have something to roll back to.
- Safe rollback and re-localization. We restore the Ukrainian software adaptation, bring back the connection to the mobile app for our region, and return your familiar services.
- We don't touch critical control modules. The modules responsible for safety and control stay untouched — we work with the infotainment and localization.
Time-wise, it's usually 1–2 hours in the workshop. Address: Kyiv, Prykoliyna St. 21.
How much it costs
Localization and post-OTA recovery start from $300. We name the exact price after inspecting the specific symptom: restoring a language is one thing, reviving a system after a failed update with a black screen is another. No hidden fees: first we look, then we quote, and only then we work.
FAQ
Can it be fixed remotely?
Full post-OTA recovery is hands-on work in the workshop. But describe the symptom in a messenger with a photo of the screen — we'll give you a preliminary assessment before you even visit.
Will the car's warranty be preserved?
We work with the infotainment and software localization without touching critical systems. Adapting the software for the Ukrainian region doesn't require dismantling any hardware.
Will everything break again after the next OTA?
It's possible — an update can overwrite the localization again. That's why we re-apply the localization after a new OTA free of charge for 6 months. In effect, you solve the issue once and don't pay for each occurrence afterwards.
What to do next
Don't stay alone with a black screen. Describe the symptom in Telegram, WhatsApp or Viber — attach a photo of the screen and briefly say what happened after the update. We'll assess the situation and tell you what to do.
