Zeekr/BYD Doesn't Detect the Charging Station or Shows a "Connection Error": What to Do
Stay calm. If your Zeekr or BYD suddenly stops detecting the charging station, or the screen shows a "connection error" / "communication error", in the vast majority of cases this is a software issue, not a hardware one. The battery, power module and charging port are usually fine. The usual culprits are: a recent OTA update, regional connectivity settings and a built-in SIM "made for China", a weak 12V battery, or simply a poorly seated GB/T→CCS2 adapter. Below is what you can safely try yourself and what is best left alone.
First Aid (Safe Steps)
- Don't yank the connector under load. First stop the session at the station (Stop button or your card), and only then unplug the connector.
- Force-restart the infotainment. Hold the screen's power button for a few seconds until the display goes dark and reboots. This clears a "frozen" connectivity module without losing data.
- Check the 12V battery. A weak or drained 12V battery is one of the most common hidden causes of "connection errors" and charging glitches. If the car has been parked for a while, it's the first suspect.
- Try another station and another mode. If the error only appears on DC, test AC (and vice versa). That tells you whether it's the car or that specific station.
- Check the GB/T→CCS2 adapter. Make sure the connector is inserted until it clicks and the contacts are clean and dry. A partial connection or a cheap adapter is a frequent source of "communication error".
If everything works after that, great. If the error keeps coming back, read on.
Why It Happens
OTA updates. Zeekr and BYD are "smartphones on wheels". Updates arrive from China and can overwrite language and regional settings, revert to the Chinese interface, or break a previously applied localization. After an OTA, the car sometimes "doesn't recognize" the local infrastructure.
Chinese build and connectivity region. The factory connectivity settings and built-in SIM are tuned for Chinese servers and networks. In Ukraine this shows up as no internet in the car, endless "loading" at the charger, or authorization errors in the in-car app. This is a matter of legally adapting the software for the region, not "hacking".
Adapter and protocol. Many cars from China have a GB/T port, while Ukrainian fast chargers are mostly CCS2. The adapter physically connects the plugs, but charging is also a "conversation" between the car and the station about current and voltage. A poor adapter or a protocol-settings mismatch produces the "connection error".
Internet. The basic "car↔station" handshake happens locally, so internet isn't always required for charging itself. But without proper connectivity, remote functions, battery pre-heating before charging, and some app scenarios won't work, and the car "looks" faulty even though everything is physically intact.
What Not to Do
- Don't factory-reset the car "blindly" — you may wipe the localization and end up with the Chinese interface too.
- Don't flash firmware "at random" from dubious sources until the cause is clear.
- Don't touch the 12V terminals or high-voltage connectors yourself.
- Don't force charging if the station reports an insulation error or overheating — that's no longer about connectivity.
- Don't trust random "technicians" who offer to "reflash everything" without a backup.
How We Restore It
We work carefully and predictably:
- Backup first. We save the current state so there's always a safe rollback.
- We don't touch critical ECUs. No interference with battery, brake or ADAS modules — only connectivity, language and regional software adaptation.
- Timing. Diagnostics take about 15 minutes, the main work 1–2 hours at the workshop (Kyiv, 21 Prykoliyna St., open 09:00–21:00).
- Warranty. If a future OTA overwrites the localization, we'll re-apply it free of charge within 6 months.
How Much It Costs
We quote the exact price right after the VIN and inspection, with no hidden fees. Ballpark figures:
- LANG BASIC (language and interface) — from $300.
- LANG+CONNECT (language + in-car connectivity/internet) — from $500.
- ADAPTER DC (selection and setup for GB/T→CCS2) — individual.
- Auto Concierge (we pick up and return the car within Kyiv) — from $100.
By brand: Zeekr — from $300, BYD — from $350.
FAQ
Is the battery broken? Almost never. A "connection error" is about the connectivity module and software, not the power side. We check the 12V and connectivity first.
Can I charge at all without internet? Usually yes — basic charging doesn't need a network. But some functions and the correct interface depend on connectivity adaptation.
Chinese language is back after OTA — is that permanent? No. We re-apply the localization; within 6 months it's free.
