Zeekr Back in Chinese After an Update: How to Restore Language and Services
You installed a routine update, the car rebooted — and instead of the familiar menu you're back to Chinese characters, English, or a black screen. We understand the worry: it's an expensive car, and right now it's acting like something is broken. Take a breath — in the vast majority of cases this is a recoverable software issue, not a hardware failure. The OTA simply overwrote the language and regional settings, and we'll walk through exactly what to do.
First aid: try this right now
Before driving anywhere, a few safe steps that often bring the system back to normal:
- Force a reboot of the head unit. Hold the power button or volume knob for about 10–15 seconds, until the screen goes dark and the logo appears. This is the standard hard-reboot method and it breaks nothing.
- Let the car “sleep.” Lock it, take the key away, and don't touch it for 20–30 minutes. Sometimes after an OTA the system needs time to finish loading components in the background.
- Check the 12-volt battery. A voltage drop during an update is a common cause of freezes and black screens. If the car has been sitting for a while or the battery is old, that's the first thing to look at.
- Do NOT install random firmware or re-run the update blindly. Pushing another update on top can make things worse. If a reboot didn't help — stop at this step.
If the system came back to life after the reboot but the language and services are gone — read on, that part is our job.
Why this happens
Honestly, and with no mystery. Zeekr (the 001 and other models alike) ships from the factory with Chinese-version software. English, Ukrainian, the app connection and part of the services are an adaptation installed after the car is imported.
When an OTA update from the manufacturer arrives, it brings the factory Chinese set of languages and regional settings — and overwrites what had been adapted. That's why you see Chinese or English again, while the app “can't see the car” and reports no connection to the server.
The key thing to understand: this is not a mechanical failure. Nothing burned out. The update simply reverted the system to its base regional state, and the localization needs to be reapplied.
What NOT to do
To avoid turning a recoverable situation into an expensive repair:
- Don't reflash blindly. Firmware “from forums” and someone else's files are the fastest way to a blue or black screen with characters after a failed attempt.
- Don't disconnect the battery terminals “to reboot.” On modern cars, an abrupt power cut during an unfinished update can leave modules in an unstable state.
- Don't ship the car “back to China” or hunt for an official service for that region. The problem is local and gets solved on the spot, in Kyiv, far faster and cheaper.
- Don't tap everything on the screen if it partly responds — random taps in a foreign-language menu easily change settings that are then harder to roll back.
How we restore it
Our approach is careful and predictable:
- Symptom diagnosis. We check what exactly was lost: just the language, or also the app connection, the surround-view cameras, multimedia and internet services.
- Backup. Before any changes we back up the current state, so there's always something to roll back to.
- Safe rollback and re-localization. We restore the language, the app and the services — that is, adapting the software to the Ukrainian region and restoring the app connection.
- We don't touch critical ECUs. The modules responsible for safety and driving stay untouched — we work at the media and regional level.
This usually takes 1–2 hours in the workshop (Kyiv, Prykoliyna St. 21). You leave the car and pick it up in your own language.
What it costs
Localization — from $300. We quote the exact price only after diagnosing the specific symptom — because restoring the language alone versus fully restoring the app connection and services is a different scope of work. No hidden fees: we state the amount before we start, and it doesn't grow “as we go.”
If you also need the app, remote access and services restored — that's the auto-concierge track, from $100; the exact scope is agreed after diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be fixed remotely?
No. Restoring language and services after an OTA requires working with the car on site — that's how we see the real state of the system and make a backup before any changes.
Will the car's warranty be preserved?
We work at the media and regional level and don't touch critical modules, so the factory components stay untouched. We agree the scope of work with you in advance.
Will the language get wiped again after the next OTA?
It can — an update pulls the factory settings again. That's why for 6 months, reapplying the localization is free for you: if the next update resets everything, we'll restore the language and services at no extra charge.

If you're facing a black screen, Chinese characters, or “no connection to the server” right now — don't sit with the problem alone. Describe the symptom on Telegram, WhatsApp or Viber (what happened, after which update, what's on the screen) — we'll quickly orient you and tell you what to do next.
